How to Clean Lawn Mower Air Filter

The air filter is without a doubt one of the most important parts of your lawn mower. It is what prevents dust and dirt from entering into and wearing out the engine. If it is clogged or not functioning and dust gets into the carburetor it will destroy the lawn mower’s engine.

There are a few different kinds of air filters, but the best kind is the type known as dual element air filters. What makes them the best is the fact that they provide double layer protection, having both air-pleated and foam elements.

To check your air filter look in the owner’s manual of your specific lawn mower model. Once you know where it’s located, inspect it to see if it’s overly oily or dirty. If it is, you’ll definitely want to either clean or replace it.

Here are the steps to follow in order to clean a foam filter:

  1. The first thing to do is make sure the lawn mower is off. Then pull the spark plug cord off to prevent any kind of accidents while you’re working on it. Next, remove the air filter housing.
  2. Once removed, wash the air filter in hot water and use liquid soap as its good for cutting through grease. Then rinse it and drain as much of the water as possible.
  3. Sprinkle a bit of motor oil, but not too much.
  4. Make sure you clean any dirt or debris from the rubber gasket. Inspect it to see if there are any tears or anything else that will prevent it from being able to hold a tight seal. Replace it if it’s in disrepair.
  5. Return the filter to its original place and put the cover back on.

Maintenance on Different Types of Foam Air Filters

There are different types of foam air filters out there. We’ll now explain each one of them.

The Disposable Air Filter

This type of filter is made up of a special kind of paper that is designed to catch particles. Even though you could clean these filters with a shot of compressed air, it is generally best to go ahead and throw them out after one usage.

  • Remove the air filter by opening the filter housing
  • When you’re buying your filter be sure to get the right one in the correct size
  • Install the new filter and replace the cover

The Reusable Air Filter

In order to prevent contaminants and dirt from entering the filter, it’s oiled lightly. The only maintenance it requires is washing, then it can be reused.

  • Remove the air filter by opening the filter housing
  • After removing the filter, it needs to be thoroughly washed with soap and water
  • Using a paper towel or rag dry the filter, getting out as much of the excess water as possible
  • This one varies from model to model so check your owner’s manual before you put oil on this type of filter. Some of the newer models now even call for non-oiled filters. About a spoonful of oil will do the job just fine, and be sure to blot any excess oil with a paper towel.
  • When you’re satisfied that the filter is ready, go ahead and put the filter back in position and replace the cover.

As mentioned earlier, your lawn mowers air filter is an important part and line of defense against grit and grime getting into places where it is harmful to your engine. Keeping it well maintained is important if you want to keep your mower running smoothly.  By using the tips in this article, you should be able to extend the life of your lawn mower for many years to come.
